Psychiatric Evaluation in Nashua NH
A psychiatric evaluation is the starting point for good mental health care. At PsychNashua, a board-certified psychiatrist takes the time to understand what you are experiencing, how long it has been going on, and what has or has not helped, then explains the findings in plain language and agrees a plan with you.
Who a psychiatric evaluation is for
People from Nashua book an evaluation when something has changed and they want a clear answer: low mood that has not lifted, worry that gets in the way of work or school, trouble focusing, sleep that has fallen apart, or a previous diagnosis that no longer seems to fit. Parents often come to us after a teacher or pediatrician raises a concern. We see patients from age 4 to 65.

What happens during the visit
The first appointment usually lasts longer than a follow-up. Your psychiatrist will ask about:
- Current symptoms, when they started and what makes them better or worse
- Medical history, current medications and supplements
- Past mental health treatment and how it went
- Family history, sleep, substance use, school or work, and relationships
- Safety, including any thoughts of self-harm
For children and teens, a parent or guardian joins for part of the visit, and with permission we may review school reports or speak with other clinicians.
What you leave with
By the end you should understand the working diagnosis (or what still needs to be ruled out), the options available, and the next step. That may be medication management, therapy, further testing, coordination with your primary care provider, or reassurance that specialist psychiatric care is not needed right now.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a psychiatric evaluation?
Most initial evaluations take about 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up visits are shorter.
Can I do the evaluation by telehealth?
Yes, many evaluations can be completed by secure video for patients located in New Hampshire. Your psychiatrist may recommend an in-person visit when an examination or closer observation would help.
What should I bring?
A list of current medications and doses, any previous diagnoses or reports, your insurance card, and, for a child, recent school feedback if available.
Will I get a diagnosis at the first visit?
Often yes, but some conditions, such as ADHD or autism, may need more information before a diagnosis is confirmed. Your psychiatrist will explain what is still needed.
