Treatment options
Your psychiatrist will check for medical contributors and related conditions such as anxiety or bipolar disorder, since this changes the best treatment. Options may include antidepressant medication, therapy such as CBT, sleep and activity planning, and closer follow-up during the first weeks of treatment. If standard treatments have not helped, we will discuss what else may be appropriate for you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it"s depression or just stress?
When low mood lasts two weeks or more and affects daily life, an evaluation is worthwhile.
Will I need medication?
Not always. Mild depression may respond well to therapy alone; moderate to severe depression often benefits from medication plus therapy.
What if antidepressants have not worked for me before?
Tell us which ones you tried and for how long. There are many options, and a careful review often finds a better fit.
What should I do if I have thoughts of suicide?
Call or text 988 at any time, or call 911 if you are in immediate danger. Please also tell your psychiatrist.
