Is it anxiety?
Anxiety becomes a disorder when it is out of proportion to the situation, lasts for months, and gets in the way of work, school, relationships or sleep. Physical symptoms are common: muscle tension, headaches, stomach upset, shortness of breath and fatigue. A medical check matters too, because thyroid problems, caffeine and some medicines can cause similar symptoms.

Treatment that works
- Therapy: cognitive behavioral therapy teaches skills to reduce worry and avoidance. We help you find a therapist.
- Medication: SSRIs and SNRIs are first-line options for many anxiety disorders and are not habit-forming.
- Lifestyle: sleep, exercise, alcohol and caffeine all affect anxiety, and small changes help.
- Follow-up: we track progress so the plan changes if something is not working.
About sedatives
Benzodiazepines can calm acute anxiety, but they carry risks of dependence and are generally not a good long-term plan. If you already take one, we will review it with you rather than stopping it abruptly.
