Live in New Hampshire, Work in Massachusetts? Where to Get Psychiatric Care
Short answer: psychiatrists must be licensed in the state where you are physically located during the visit. If you live in Salem or Nashua but work in Massachusetts, you can be seen in our New Hampshire office or by video while you are in New Hampshire. Video visits from your Massachusetts workplace require a clinician licensed in Massachusetts.
Why location matters
Medical licenses are issued by each state. For telehealth, the rule follows the patient: where you are sitting during the visit determines which license is needed. This affects scheduling for commuters, college students and people who travel.
Practical options for commuters
Schedule video visits early in the morning or evening from home in NH
Book in-person visits at our Salem office, close to I-93 and the state line
Take a video visit from your car while parked in New Hampshire (only when safely parked)
If you spend most of your time in Massachusetts, consider care with a Massachusetts-licensed practice
Prescriptions across state lines
Most prescriptions can be filled at a pharmacy in either state. Controlled substances, such as ADHD stimulants, follow additional rules, so keep your prescriptions at a consistent pharmacy and check with your psychiatrist before switching.
Insurance
Many commuters have Massachusetts-based employer plans. Psych Nashua accepts many of these plans; see our insurance guide for details.
College students and travel
The same licensing rule applies to students. A New Hampshire teenager attending college in Massachusetts or elsewhere can continue video visits while home on breaks, but during the semester may need a local clinician where the school is located. Planning ahead, including enough medication to bridge the transition, prevents gaps in care. Your psychiatrist can share records with a new clinician once you give permission.
Frequently asked questions
